How to Conduct Informational Interviews That Land You a Job

By ForgedCV Team

Why Informational Interviews Are So Powerful

80% of jobs are never publicly posted. They're filled through referrals, internal transfers, and professional networks. Informational interviews give you access to this hidden market — and they're the most effective networking tool available.

Step 1: Find the Right People

Target people who:

  • Have the job you want (or one level above)
  • Work at companies you're interested in
  • Are in your extended network (2nd-degree LinkedIn connections, alumni network, industry events)

Aim for 3-5 informational interviews per month.

Step 2: The Perfect Request Message

Keep it short, respectful, and low-pressure:

"Hi [Name], I've been following your work at [Company] — especially your [specific project or insight]. I'm exploring the [field] space and would love to hear about your career path. Would you be open to a 15-minute call this month? I'm flexible around your schedule. Thanks either way!"

Key rules:

  • Reference something specific (proves you did your research)
  • Ask for advice, not a job (removes pressure)
  • Offer a specific time commitment (15-20 min)
  • Make it easy to say no

Step 3: Prepare Your Questions

Never go into an informational interview without a list of questions. Good questions:

  • "What does a typical day look like in your role?"
  • "What skills are most important for success in this field?"
  • "What do you wish you knew when you were starting out?"
  • "How has this role changed in the past 3 years?"
  • "What trends are you seeing in the industry?"

Do NOT ask: "Do you have any job openings?" (This kills the conversation.)

Step 4: The Call Itself

  • Be on time (join 2 minutes early)
  • Thank them for their time upfront
  • Take notes (with permission)
  • Watch the clock — respect their time
  • End with: "This has been incredibly helpful. Is there anyone else you'd recommend I talk to?"

Step 5: The Follow-Up

Within 24 hours, send a thank-you email:

  • Thank them again
  • Mention 1-2 specific insights you found valuable
  • Connect on LinkedIn (with a personalized note)
  • Follow up in 2-4 months with an update or relevant article

Turn Insights Into Resume Updates

After each informational interview, update your ForgedCV with any new keywords, skills, or focus areas you learned about.
